One-Bedroom Moves

One-Bedroom and Apartment Movers in Sudbury

A one-bedroom move looks simple until you hit the elevator booking, the narrow basement stairwell or the storage locker you forgot about. TCM Movers helps you plan the small details so your apartment, condo or first place in Sudbury moves out efficiently and settles in properly.

Smaller home, real logistics

Why a one-bedroom move still deserves a plan

Fewer boxes doesn't mean fewer things that can go wrong. In apartments and condos, access usually matters more than volume.

A one-bedroom move covers the contents of a smaller household: a bed and mattress, a sofa or sofa bed, a table and chairs, a dresser, a TV and stand, kitchen items, clothing and the boxes that collect in closets. It's a manageable load, but in Sudbury it often comes out of a third-floor walk-up, a high-rise with a single service elevator, or a basement unit with a low ceiling and a turning staircase.

That's where planning pays off. If the elevator isn't reserved, the loading area is blocked or the sofa won't clear the stairwell landing, a short job turns into a long, frustrating day. TCM Movers approaches apartment moves by sorting out access, building rules and awkward pieces before moving day, so the actual carrying, loading and placing of your belongings goes smoothly.

If your move is mostly about getting across town, our local moving service covers general cross-town logistics. This page focuses on what's different about moving a smaller home in and out of shared buildings.

Who we help

Who books a one-bedroom move

Apartment movers in Sudbury see a wide mix of people. Each situation comes with its own priorities.

Apartment and condo renters

Moving between buildings with elevators, buzzers, loading docks and move-in rules. Often tied to the first or last day of the month, when leases turn over.

Students and first apartments

Students at Laurentian University, Cambrian College and Collège Boréal, plus anyone leaving home for their first place. Light loads, tight budgets and fixed dates.

Downsizers and seniors

People moving from a house into a smaller apartment or seniors' residence, who need to decide what fits and what goes to family, sale or donation.

Basement and duplex units

Side entrances, low doorways and steep, turning stairs make basement suites some of the trickiest small moves in the city.

Singles and couples

Smaller households combining two places into one, or splitting one apartment into two after a change in plans.

Studio and bachelor units

Even a studio has a bed, a couch and a kitchen. The same building access planning applies at a smaller scale.

What's included

What our one-bedroom moving service covers

Every TCM Movers apartment move is built around the core work of getting your belongings from one door to the next with care:

  • Pre-move planning. We talk through both addresses, elevator or stair access, parking and any building rules before the day, so nothing catches the crew off guard.
  • Furniture protection as it's handled. Pieces are protected as they're carried through hallways, doorways and elevators, which also helps protect the building's walls and door frames.
  • Loading and transport. Your belongings are loaded so they travel securely, then driven to your new place.
  • Unloading and placement. Furniture and boxes go into the rooms you choose, so the bed is in the bedroom and the kitchen boxes are in the kitchen.
  • Clear communication. You know what to expect, and you have a contact if plans change, like a delayed key handover.

If you'd like help with extras such as packing, packing materials, taking apart a bed frame or desk, or moving a single item to storage, tell us in your quote request and we'll confirm what's available for your date.

Before moving day

Planning a one-bedroom move, week by week

General guidance that works for most apartment moves. Adjust it to your lease dates and schedule.

Four to six weeks out

Confirm your lease end and start dates, and request a quote early if you're moving near the first or last day of the month or during late August and spring student turnover. Those dates fill quickly across Sudbury. Read both leases or condo rules for anything about move times, elevator reservations, deposits or required floor and wall protection.

Three weeks out

Book the elevator or loading area at both buildings and get the reservation in writing. Ask property management where the truck should park and whether there's a dock, a side door or a time limit at the front entrance. Start sorting: clothes you don't wear, duplicate kitchen gear and furniture that won't suit the new layout.

Two weeks out

Measure the big pieces and the new space. Check the sofa, mattress and dresser against the new unit's door widths, hallway turns and stairwell landings. Arrange pickups for anything you're selling or donating so it leaves before moving day, not during it.

The final week

Pack everything except daily essentials. Empty your storage locker and clear the balcony. Confirm the elevator booking and arrival details with both buildings and with us. Defrost a small freezer if you have one, and set aside keys, fobs and parking passes so they're easy to find.

Moving day

How your one-bedroom moving day unfolds

  1. Arrival and walkthrough

The crew meets you, checks the elevator booking or stair route, and walks the unit with you to note fragile pieces and anything that's staying behind.

  2. Protecting the path

Furniture is protected as it's handled, and the route from your door to the truck is cleared so hallways and elevator cabs stay unobstructed for neighbours.

  3. Large pieces first

The sofa, mattress, bed frame and dresser usually go out first while the elevator time is fresh, followed by boxes, the storage locker and balcony items.

  4. Loading for the trip

Items are loaded so they won't shift in transit, with boxes stacked by weight and fragile items kept apart.

  5. Final check

Before leaving, you walk through the empty unit, closets, locker and balcony with us so nothing is forgotten.

  6. Unloading at your new place

At the new building, furniture goes into the rooms you choose and boxes are placed by room, following your new building's elevator or entrance arrangements.

Apartment-specific details

What makes apartment and condo moves different

Elevator bookings and building rules

Many Sudbury apartment and condo buildings ask residents to reserve the elevator or loading area for a set window, and some restrict moves to certain days or hours. If you don't have a booking, the crew may end up sharing the elevator with residents, which slows everything down. Book early at both ends and tell us the times you've secured.

Narrow stairwells and tight halls

Walk-ups and basement units are where furniture size really matters. Queen mattresses, box springs and sofa beds are heavy and awkward on turning stairs. A sofa bed's folding mechanism makes it much heavier than it looks. Tell us about tight landings, low ceilings or side-entrance basements in advance so we can plan the route.

The hidden volume

A "one-bedroom" is rarely just one bedroom. Storage lockers, balcony furniture, bikes, a barbecue, seasonal tires and a closet full of boxes can add a surprising amount to the load. Include them when you describe your move so the quote reflects what's actually going.

Your quote

What shapes the cost of a one-bedroom move

Every apartment move is quoted on its own details. These are the factors that matter most.

Volume

How much furniture and how many boxes you have, including lockers, balconies and bikes.

Access at both ends

Floors, stairs, elevator availability, walking distance from the truck to your door and any loading dock rules.

Date and timing

Month-end and student turnover periods are in high demand. Flexible dates can make scheduling easier.

Distance and extras

How far you're going and any extras you ask about, such as packing help or a stop at a storage unit.

The more accurately you describe your unit, the more accurate your quote. The quote request form asks the questions that matter for apartment moves.

Packing tips

Packing and organizing a smaller home

In a one-bedroom, packing space is tight. A little organization keeps you living comfortably until the day you move.

  • Pack in a staging corner. Choose one wall or corner for finished boxes and stack them neatly so your hallway and the path to the door stay clear.
  • Start with the locker and closets. Seasonal clothing, holiday décor and items in storage can be packed weeks ahead without disrupting daily life.
  • Use smaller boxes for books and dishes. Heavy, compact boxes are easier to carry down narrow stairs and fit better in a shared elevator.
  • Label by room and priority. In a smaller place, the kitchen and bedroom boxes you need first should be marked so they're placed where you'll open them that night.
  • Bag the bedding separately. Strip the bed the morning of the move and keep sheets, pillows and a towel in one bag so you can make the bed as soon as you arrive.
  • Prep the mattress. A mattress bag or plastic cover keeps it clean in transit, which matters in wet or snowy weather.
  • Keep an essentials box. Chargers, toiletries, medications, a kettle, toilet paper, basic tools and your new keys and fob.

Selling, donating and downsizing

Moving into a smaller space is the best time to let go. Measure your new unit and decide early which furniture fits. List items for sale or arrange donation pickups at least a week before the move, and keep anything that's leaving separate and clearly marked so it doesn't end up on the truck. For seniors downsizing, involving family early in deciding who takes what makes moving day calmer for everyone.

Local know-how

One-bedroom moves in Sudbury and Northern Ontario

Sudbury's rental market runs on lease cycles. The first and last days of the month are busy, and late August and spring bring a wave of student moves around Laurentian University, Cambrian College and Collège Boréal. If your date falls in one of those windows, reach out early and book your elevator as soon as your lease is signed.

Apartments and condos are spread across Greater Sudbury, from Downtown and the South End to New Sudbury, Minnow Lake, Valley East and Lively. Hilly streets and the rocky Canadian Shield terrain mean some buildings have steep driveways or long walks from the parking area to the entrance. Let us know so we can plan the approach.

If your one-bedroom move is taking you out of the city, see our long-distance moving page for what changes on longer routes. If you're moving up to a bigger place with a partner or roommate, our two-bedroom moving service is a better fit. Not sure which applies? FAQ

One-Bedroom Moves: common questions

Do I need to book the elevator for my apartment move?

In most Sudbury apartment and condo buildings, yes. Many buildings ask residents to reserve the elevator or loading area for a set window, and some limit moves to certain days or hours. Book at both your current and new building as soon as you know your date, get the reservation confirmed in writing, and share the times with us. Without a booking, the crew may share the elevator with residents, which slows the move and can frustrate neighbours.

Will my sofa or mattress fit through the stairwell?

Most do, but tight landings, low basement ceilings and narrow halls can make some pieces difficult. Measure the width and depth of large items and compare them with door openings, hallway turns and stair landings at the new place. Sofa beds are heavier than they look because of the folding frame. Describe any tight spots in your quote request and we can plan the route. If a piece might need to be taken apart, mention it and we will confirm what is possible.

How much stuff counts as a one-bedroom move?

Typically a bed and mattress, a dresser or two, a sofa, a small table and chairs, a TV and stand, and the boxes from your kitchen, bedroom and closets. The items people forget are what change the picture: storage locker contents, balcony furniture, bikes, a barbecue, seasonal tires and anything stored at a friend's place. List all of it when you request a quote so the plan and price reflect what is really moving.

I'm a student. When should I book my move?

As early as possible. Late August and spring are peak times in Sudbury because students at Laurentian, Cambrian and Collège Boréal all move around the same dates, and those weeks often overlap with month-end lease turnovers. Once you know your move-out and move-in dates, request a quote and reserve elevators at both buildings. If your dates are flexible by even a day or two, mention that, since it can make scheduling easier.

I'm downsizing to a smaller apartment. How do I decide what to bring?

Start with the floor plan of your new unit and measure the rooms. Decide which furniture fits and which pieces will crowd the space. Offer items to family first, then arrange sales or donation pickups at least a week before moving day so everything that is leaving is gone before the truck arrives. Keep anything that is not coming clearly marked. Seniors moving into a residence should also check its rules about move times and elevator use.

What affects the cost of a one-bedroom move?

The main factors are the volume of furniture and boxes, access at both ends (stairs, floors, elevators and how far the truck parks from your door), the date you choose, the distance between addresses and any extras you ask about, such as packing help. Month-end and student turnover dates are in high demand. The more detail you give us about your building and belongings, the more accurate your quote will be.
