Moving beyond Sudbury
A long-distance move is a different kind of move
Distance changes the order of everything: what gets packed first, how the truck is loaded, what you carry yourself and how you stay in touch along the way.
A move across town can absorb a forgotten box or a last-minute change. A move from Sudbury to another Northern Ontario community, to southern Ontario or farther cannot. Once the truck pulls away, everything you need for the next several days either travels with you or is on board, and anything that was packed loosely has a long stretch of highway to shift around.
That is why TCM Movers treats long-distance moving as a planning job first. We start by understanding where you are going, what you are bringing and what the access looks like at both ends. From there we build an inventory, talk through timing and route considerations, and agree on how we will keep you informed. The goal is simple: no surprises on loading day, on the road, or when the doors open at your new home.
We are based in Sudbury, so we know the starting end of the trip well. For the destination, the approach is straightforward: tell us where you are going and we will confirm what we can do and how we would plan it.
Who we help
Who books a long-distance move with us
Job and career moves
Mining, health care, education and government work often mean relocating between northern communities or heading south. These moves usually come with a fixed start date, so a clear plan helps.
Moving closer to family
Retirees and families moving to be near children, parents or grandchildren, sometimes downsizing at the same time and deciding what comes along.
Coming home to Sudbury
People returning to Greater Sudbury from elsewhere in Ontario. Tell us where you are moving from and we will talk through how the pickup end would work.
The service
What a long-distance move with TCM Movers includes
The core of every move is the same careful work. Distance adds more planning and more communication around it.
- Pre-move planning conversation. We go over your origin, destination, dates you are considering, access at both homes and anything unusual you are bringing.
- A detailed inventory. A room-by-room list of furniture and approximate box counts, so the quote, the loading plan and the unloading all work from the same picture.
- Protecting furniture as it is handled. Pieces are protected as they are carried out, loaded and unloaded so finishes and corners are not exposed along the way.
- Loading planned for distance. Heavy items low and forward, weight balanced across the load, and everything secured so it does not shift over a long drive.
- Transport and unloading. We drive your belongings to the new address, unload, and place furniture and boxes in the rooms you choose.
- Clear communication. Confirmations before the move, updates on loading day and contact during the trip, so you are not left guessing.

Preparation
How to plan a long-distance move, step by step
General guidance only. Every household is different, but starting early gives you room to make decisions calmly.
Two months or more ahead
Contact us early, especially if your dates are tied to a job start, a closing date or the end of a lease. Long-distance moves need more lead time to plan than local ones, and the first and last days of the month fill up quickly. Start sorting: every item you sell, donate or discard now is an item you do not pay to move a long way. Be honest about bulky furniture that may not suit the new space.
Six to four weeks ahead
Finalize your inventory with us. If you add a shed full of tools or a second freezer later, the plan changes, so it helps to walk through every room, closet, basement and garage now. Measure large pieces and compare them with doorways and stairwells at the new home if you can get the dimensions. Begin packing rooms you rarely use, such as guest rooms, storage areas and seasonal items.
Three to two weeks ahead
Confirm access at the destination: parking for a large vehicle, elevator bookings if it is an apartment or condo, and any building rules on moving hours. Start your address changes and arrange to transfer or set up utilities, internet and home insurance at the new address. Book any travel and accommodation you will need for yourself and your family.
The final week
Pack everything except daily essentials. Set aside a clearly marked "do not load" area for anything travelling with you. Defrost and dry the freezer if it is coming along. Confirm your contact numbers with us and share a phone number for whoever will be at the destination to receive the load.
Loading day and arrival
What happens on moving day
Arrival and walk-through
Our team arrives, confirms the inventory with you and walks through the home. You point out what stays, what goes and what is in the "do not load" area.
Protection and preparation
Furniture is protected as it is handled, and we plan the order of the load so heavy, sturdy pieces go first and fragile, lighter items are placed where they will ride safely.
Loading for the long haul
Items are loaded tightly and secured in sections so nothing has room to slide on hills, curves or rough stretches of road. Boxes are stacked heaviest at the bottom.
Final check and departure
We do a last walk through closets, cupboards, the basement and the garage with you, then confirm destination details and contact information before heading out.
On the road
We stay reachable during the trip and keep you informed if weather or road conditions affect the plan. Safe driving comes first, always.
Arrival coordination
We contact you or your designated person ahead of arrival so someone is there with keys, parking is clear and any elevator booking is in place.
Unloading and placement
Furniture and boxes go into the rooms you choose. Clear room labels on boxes make this step faster and help you settle in sooner.
Northern Ontario roads
Routes, weather and seasons
From Sudbury, Highway 17 runs east and west, Highway 144 heads north and Highways 69 and 400 lead south. Each route has its own character through the year.
Long stretches of Northern Ontario highway pass through rock cuts, forest and lake country with fewer services between towns than many people expect. Winter brings snow, ice, blowing snow and the occasional closure, and conditions can change quickly between Sudbury and your destination. Spring brings thaw, potholes and, on some northern roads, seasonal load restrictions that can affect heavier vehicles. Summer is construction season on many highways.
None of this means a long-distance move cannot happen in any season. It means the plan should leave some flexibility. When we talk through your move, we will look at the time of year and the route and be honest about how conditions could affect timing. If weather turns on the day, we will keep you updated rather than push on in unsafe conditions.
Things to think about
Considerations unique to moving a long way
Keep the essentials with you
Passports and ID, medications, school and medical records, financial documents, jewellery, irreplaceable photos, chargers, laptops and keys for the new home should travel in your own vehicle, not on the truck.
Kids and pets travel separately
Plan their trip on its own: comfort items, snacks, a travel crate for pets, water and familiar bedding. Pack an overnight bag for each person in case you arrive before the truck.
Paperwork and address changes
Update your address with Canada Post mail forwarding, the Canada Revenue Agency, your bank, employer and insurer. Within Ontario, update your driver's licence, health card and vehicle registration; moving provinces has its own requirements.
Access at the destination
We cannot walk the new home the way we walk your Sudbury one, so details matter. Tell us about stairs, long driveways, narrow streets, elevators, loading docks and parking so we can plan for them.
Your quote is shaped by the volume of belongings, the distance, access and stairs or elevators at both ends, the date and any extras you ask about. The more accurate the inventory, the more accurate the plan. Moving a larger household? Our full-home moving and three-bedroom moving pages go deeper into organizing a big load before it leaves Sudbury.

Packing tips
Packing for a longer trip on the truck
Boxes that survive a short drive across town can fail on a long haul. A little extra care at packing time pays off at the other end.
- Use sturdy boxes and fill them completely. Half-empty boxes crush when stacked. Fill gaps with towels, linens or paper so contents cannot shift.
- Wrap fragile items individually. Plates stand on edge, glasses get their own wrap, and lamps travel without shades or bulbs.
- Label on two sides and the top. Write the destination room and a short description. Mark fragile boxes clearly, and number your boxes so you can check the count at arrival.
- Seal liquids and remove batteries. Tighten lids, tape them and bag them. Plan not to load flammables, propane or open paint cans; ask us if you are unsure about an item.
- Pack an "open first" box for each room. Bedding, a few dishes, toilet paper, a kettle, basic tools and chargers make the first night far easier.

Staying in touch
Communication before, during and after your move
Before: we confirm your inventory, dates, both addresses and the contact person at each end. If your plans shift, tell us as soon as you can so we can adjust.
During: you will know who to contact while your belongings are on the road. If weather, road closures or conditions change the plan, we will let you know.
After: once everything is unloaded, we walk through with you to make sure items are in the right rooms and nothing has been missed. If you have questions once you are settled, get in touch.

FAQ
Long-Distance Moving: common questions
Where can TCM Movers move me from Sudbury?
We are based in Sudbury and serve Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario, and we take on long-distance moves beyond the city. Rather than publish a fixed list of destinations, we prefer to look at each move individually. Tell us where you are going, your preferred dates and roughly what you are moving, and we will confirm whether we can handle it and how we would plan the trip. The same applies if you are moving to Sudbury from somewhere else.
How long will my long-distance move take?
It depends on the distance, the size of your household, access at both homes, the time of year and road and weather conditions on the day. We do not quote fixed transit times on this page because every move is different. When you request a quote, we will talk through your route and dates and give you a realistic picture of how the loading, travel and unloading could be scheduled, and we will keep you updated if conditions change.
How far in advance should I book a long-distance move?
As early as you reasonably can. Long-distance moves involve more planning than local ones, and dates around the first and last days of the month, along with late summer when students move, tend to fill up. Reaching out several weeks or more ahead gives time to build an accurate inventory, sort out access at the destination and plan around the season. If your move is short-notice, contact us anyway and we will tell you what is possible.
What affects the cost of a long-distance move?
The main factors are the volume of belongings, the distance travelled, access at both ends (stairs, elevators, long carries, parking), the date you choose and any extras you ask about, such as packing help or specialty items. An accurate inventory is the best way to get an accurate quote. Items you sell or donate before the move reduce what needs to be loaded and carried, so sorting early can make a real difference.
What should I not put on the moving truck?
Keep important documents, medications, valuables, jewellery, irreplaceable photos, laptops, chargers and keys to the new home with you. Hazardous items such as propane tanks, gasoline, open paint, cleaning chemicals and ammunition generally should not be loaded. Perishable food and plants are better handled separately too. If you are unsure about a particular item, list it in your quote request and we will let you know how to handle it.
Do you offer packing, storage or furniture assembly for long-distance moves?
Our core service is careful loading, protecting furniture as it is handled, transport, unloading and placing items in the rooms you choose. If you would like packing help, packing materials, furniture disassembly and reassembly, appliance or piano moving, or somewhere to hold your belongings between homes, mention it in your quote request. We will confirm what is available for your specific move rather than promise something in advance.
