Quick reference

A simple moving timeline

Use this as a starting point and adjust it for the size of your home and how far you are going.

  1. Six to eight weeks out

Choose your date and request moving quotes. Walk through every room, closet, storage locker, basement and garage and decide what is not coming with you. Start selling, donating or recycling those items now, while there is time.

  2. Four weeks out

Confirm your mover and your date. Book elevators or loading areas if either building requires it. Start packing rooms and items you use least — books, off-season clothing, decor, the spare room.

  3. Two weeks out

Arrange utility transfers and internet installation, and set up mail forwarding. Measure large furniture and the doorways, stairs and hallways it needs to pass through at the new home. Label each box with its destination room and a short description.

  4. The final week

Pack everything except daily essentials. Empty, defrost and dry the fridge and freezer if they are moving. Set aside documents, medications, chargers, keys and valuables to travel with you. Confirm arrival details and parking with your mover.

  5. The day before

Pack a first-night box: bedding, towels, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic tools, snacks, phone chargers and anything the kids or pets need. In winter, clear and salt walkways, steps and the driveway.

  6. Moving day

Do a walkthrough with the moving team, point out fragile items and anything that should not go on the truck, and stay reachable by phone. At the new home, direct furniture to the right rooms and do a final check before the team leaves.

Quick tips

Small habits that make moving day easier

Pack heavy items small

Books, tools and canned goods go in small boxes; light, bulky items like linens go in larger ones. Boxes that can be lifted safely move faster and arrive in better shape.

Label two sides

Write the destination room and a short description on the top and at least one side of every box, so it can be read when boxes are stacked.

Measure before you move

Measure large pieces and the tightest doorway, stairwell or elevator at the new home. It is easier to plan a solution in advance than on the day.

Plan for winter

In Sudbury’s colder months, clear and salt every path the moving team will use, and protect floors near entrances from snow and slush.

Keep essentials with you

Passports, documents, medications, jewellery, keys and chargers should travel with you, not on the truck.

Watch month-end

The last and first days of the month are busy for leases and moves. If your dates are flexible, a mid-month move can be easier to schedule.
